Michael Van Gerwen Weight Loss

For years, the majority of darts fans have imagined a version of Michael van Gerwen with a barrel chested body and a green shirt draped across his body, prowling the oche with a unique combination of delight and danger. It was a familiar picture. Nearly a brand. People took note when he looked much thinner during the PDC tour in the fall of 2025. Not only the admirers. Everybody.

Just before the World Darts Championship in Alexandra Palace in December 2025, UK newspapers were already portraying it as a drastic bodily makeover. Van Gerwen said, “I’ve lost more than twenty kilos and we’re not there yet”, on the Dutch podcast Darts Draait Door. Within hours, the statement appeared on every significant British sports website.

I still have to drop roughly ten. It was the type of number that stops you in the middle of scrolling. Twenty kg is not a subtle change in lifestyle. For a man who had been among the most recognizable competitors in his sport for more than ten years, that was a true physical makeover that carried weight in every way.

The explanations were not wholly successful. 2025’s personal stress was a major factor. After ten years of marriage, Van Gerwen announced his divorce from Daphne Govers in June of that year. In addition, his father was receiving cancer therapy, which included amputation of his nose. When participating in darts on the largest stages, they are heavy items to handle. In the words of his close friend and fellow Dutch professional Vincent van der Voort, who was with him on the same podcast: “At first, he lost weight quickly because of stress.” He didn’t feel hungry, so he would simply skip meals all day. Then it moves quickly.

Even Van Gerwen didn’t run away from that. He said, “In a long relationship you fall into a rut where you don’t put yourself first”, acknowledging that the loss was divided between living more mindfully and responding to stress. I do now, and that is important.” It seems straightforward until you take into account how infrequently professional sportsmen, especially those from a sport with an antiquated culture like darts, discuss the emotional mechanics of their own physical transformations. It’s almost refreshingly unguarded.

Since it’s not a traditional tale, it’s also important to comprehend the practical aspect of how he arrived. “It’s my lifestyle”, he said to Winmau. When you cook healthily at home and work out, or when you avoid the unhealthy meals after the darts. I believe that playing padel is beneficial for you. Additionally, it is beneficial to mindset. And also when you’re home it clears your mind a bit”.

He has made it apparent that he doesn’t much enjoy going to the gym. He claims that it numbs his mind. He has found his groove in padel, the racquet sport that has subtly taken over European recreational sports culture in recent years. On a padel court, you meet individuals. There is social energy, competitiveness, and movement. It makes more sense than a treadmill would for someone like Van Gerwen, who thrives in that kind of pressurized environment.

There have been a variety of intriguing outcomes on the oche. In 2025, he advanced to two major televised finals: the World Championship final, where he lost to Luke Littler; the World Series of Darts decider, where he defeated Littler in September; and the German Darts Grand Prix, which he won in April. He missed the Players Championship Finals for the first time in his career as a result of withdrawing from many Players Championship events due to personal hardship. The image is intricate. During some of the most difficult months of his adult life, the metamorphosis was occurring messily rather than smoothly propelling him to new heights.

The kit situation turned into an improbable source of humor. Van Gerwen remarked, “I’m not going to throw in pajamas, am I? Winmau, his shirt supplier, was having trouble keeping up with his fluctuating proportions. I’m not Brad Pitt, and I also don’t have a six pack.” It’s hard not to warm to a man who, in the middle of a very big physical and personal makeover, nonetheless reaches for self deprecation over self promotion.

His throw hasn’t changed as a result of losing weight, he claimed, adding, “People maybe think that, but I don’t see it or I don’t feel it.” The darts community will be closely monitoring whether that holds true as he continues to drop weight. The mechanics of tossing 26 gram tungsten darts at a board 2.37 meters away are accurate enough that even little changes in posture and balance can have an impact since bodies alter differently at different stages of any weight loss process.

Then January 2026 arrived, and it seemed like a turning point. Van Gerwen was in a different mindset after winning the Bahrain Darts Masters, his 17th World Series championship on his 50th World Series participation. The Daily Record was informed by him that he was introducing “version 2.0.” Another 1.5 stones, or about 9.5 kg, was the aim. “I’m feeling terrific. “I’m at ease”, he remarked. As things plays out, it seems that the victory for Bahrain was more than simply a title. It was a sign that the new version of himself was succeeding.

Additionally, he has begun to situate all of this within a larger context than his own professional trajectory. Dart fitness is actually evolving. Physical conditioning is becoming increasingly important to players on the PDC tour, and Van Gerwen, the sport’s dominant force on pure talent, appears committed to contributing to this evolution rather than being left behind.

The weight reduction tale may prove to be just as important to darts society as it is to van Gerwen. The sport has evolved significantly from its pub room beginnings, and witnessing its most accomplished contemporary player rebuild himself at age 36 may be the best indication of its future.
