How Jason Steele Was Built: From Netflix Punchline to World Cup Medallist

How Was Jason Steele

One early 2023 moment defines Jason Steele. European football’s most demanding coach, Roberto De Zerbi, goes to Falmer’s training pitch and works with a 32 year old goaltender the Premier League had written off. The goalkeeper reserve, cult figure, and Netflix documentary subject seen in Manchester and Melbourne living rooms subsequently said he felt twenty one again. He felt vital.

It works hard. Feeling alive at 32 means football was killing you earlier. Steele was in Sunderland in 2017 18 during a collapse that inspired a TV series and made him a symbol of institutional dysfunction. Sunderland Till I Die streamed his worst professional weeks internationally. He never watched. He probably never will.

From Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, a post war new town with a strong football connection, Jason Steele was born. The August 1990 born boy played for the local sports club, attended a secondary school that quietly produced footballers, and watched them leave. Lewis Wing, five years younger, grew up nearby. He played for Steele’s Sunday league squad since Wing was too little for Darlington as a teenager. Steele was a community leader before joining the Premier League.

Middlesbrough’s academy carefully cultivated him after noticing him young. Steele adopted the north east football development philosophy of patience over fame, fitness over flair. He was the Riverside’s first choice in 2012 13, playing every minute of the Championship season, receiving the North East Football Writers’ Young Player of the Year award, saving a penalty that won a match, and registering assists in a league where goalkeepers rarely did. Teammates selected Season MVPs. His age was 22. Outside, it looked promising.

Then it stopped. He lost confidence, place, and club footing. After two and a half seasons in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers, another relegation, and then Sunderland, he claimed he sometimes didn’t want to leave the house, take his kids to school, or use his phone. A documentary doesn’t portray that season’s human cost. The documentary shows a man publicly failing in a dissolving team.

Brighton saved him in summer 2018, which is flattering. He joined to leave Sunderland. Saying yes was enough. Three managers kept him after four years of cup appearances, reserve minutes, and Premier League cameos because he trained hard and behaved professionally. Graham Potter, a non emotional man, felt he improved as an athlete, player, and person. The comment was kind. This was correct too.

Zerbi drastically altered the terms. The Italian coach briefly replaced Robert Sanchez as Brighton’s goalkeeper in September 2022. According to league tracking statistics, Steele made more passes under pressure per 90 minutes than any other Premier League goalie and surpassed his anticipated completion % by more. Sanchez was opposite, measured by the same gear. De Zerbi deserved. He replaced a fifty nine game starter with a Premier League backup who had played once in five seasons. Steele returned to the league after defeating West Ham 4–0. He gave Kaoru Mitoma his ninth top flight assist since 2010, more than any other goalie. Assists. From keeper. He spent most of his 15 year career on the bench, doubling others.

In 2025 26, Steele returned as a backup but led the dressing room and advised the younger players. Brighton coach Fabian Hurzeler extended his contract in October 2025 and considered his departure one of the worst messages. That’s not how managers talk about benched goalies. This describes load bearing walls.

Thomas Tuchel picked him for England in March 2026. Steele had not played a Premier League minute that season. Tuchel explained his decision, which startled but made sense. The England manager needed a fourth World Cup goalkeeper who trained hard every day, pushed the first choice squad without disturbing it, and lifted the culture without being in the spotlight. A standing ovation from his Brighton teammates followed the announcement. After the next home match, first choice Bart Verbruggen, who had played every minute that season, shoved Steele into the North Stand applause. These aren’t random.

At the World Cup, Steele trained as a goaltender outside the official twenty six, preparing his colleagues for opponents he would never face. Bronze for England. Harry Kane and Jordan Henderson called Steele over to confirm his medal after the six four win over France. That gesture is small. No viewer thought it was little.

.His wife handled the canceled family vacation well. He stated his mother supported him through good and terrible times. Reading Steele’s words over time reveals resilience was never individual. Daisy Chain ambassador, he promotes north east neurodivergent communities. His mention of Newton Aycliffe implies a return. The documentary that defined him, which he never watched, is available on demand about his worst season. It’s no longer my first thinking. I imagine a thirty sixth year old goalkeeper on a World Cup podium with an undeserved bronze medal, surrounded by teammates who requested he be there.
