From 98kg in Zaragoza to 260 Pounds in Oklahoma City The Aday Mara Weight Journey

Aday Mara Weight

There is a picture not a famous one, not widely shared of Aday Mara playing for Casademont Zaragoza as a seventeen year old, beanpole arms reaching up over a crowd of adult men, his frame noticeably lighter than everyone around him. He loomed above them. By the standards of professional basketball, he was also too underweight to really matter yet. That space between what his body promised and what it could provide was the first chapter of his story. It is a chapter he’s been attempting to end every year since.

Mara came into American college basketball with measurements that stopped scouts mid conversation: seven feet three inches tall, a wingspan of seven feet six, a standing reach of nine feet nine and a listed weight of around 216 to 220 pounds. For most guys that would be a good, athletic build. That is, for a center whose job is to anchor a defense and absorb contact from NBA caliber players, it meant getting moved off the block, getting out muscled under the glass, getting exposed in ways that had nothing to do with skill. His basketball intelligence showed through very quickly. His body was just not ready for the battle.

What happened is quite well known now in the circles of scouting, though it has not gotten the type of attention in the mainstream that it probably deserves. At UCLA, strength instructors began to build him not to be bulky in the old school way, adding pounds to plant him in the post, but to be functionally massive. Compound lifting. Lower body strength.Core strength. The goal was to keep him feeling lighter as the scale crept higher, to gain strength without pushing more weight into joints already under severe stress at his height. By his second year there, something had changed. He was about 250 pounds, but athletes who practiced against him said he seemed larger. Mara was beginning to catch on to the genuine difference between scale weight and effective weight.

To outside observers, the relocation to Michigan felt like another risk, new surroundings, new system, new expectations. But what it really was, was the moment the work showed itself. Playing extended minutes for the first time, Mara put up twelve points, almost seven boards, and over two blocks a game, shooting a ridiculous sixty six percent from the field. The shooting % is the clearest proof of what the additional strength had done for him: not only was he posting higher numbers, he was finishing plays that his lighter self would have lost. Pushing away bigger guys. Holding ground in pick and roll coverage. Contact that is absorbed rather than initiated. Michigan won a national title. Mara was conference defensive player of the year. The timing is impossible to ignore.

His dad played professional basketball. His mother played volleyball. It would be too clean to say genetics gave him everything, but it would be as wrong to ignore what a life around competitive sport brings to a young athlete’s understanding of his own body. Mara is said to have taken up basketball at the age of eight. By the time he made his debut in the ACB, Spain’s highest professional league, aged 17, he had already acquired the kind of physical education most players don’t encounter until college.

His official measurements at the 2026 NBA Draft Combine were 259.8 pounds. That number is worth sitting with. Victor Wembanyama is similarly tall and weighs about 245 pounds. Zach Edey, the more physically imposing traditional center, is closer to 305 pounds. Mara stands in between those two reference points which is, somewhat curiously, exactly where you’d want to be if you required a modern big who can protect the rim without being attached to it. It is truly an open question whether that balance will stay when he absorbs an NBA schedule, with its travel, its limited recovery windows, its nightly contact against pros who outweigh him in experience if not often in stature.

Oklahoma City drafted him No. 12 overall. That choice was about something specific: OKC wanted length, interior passing vision and the type of rim deterrent that changes opponent decision making before the shot even occurs. That’s a nine foot nine standing reach, jumping or not. His stated vertical leap numbers in the neighborhood of 24 inches without a step, which are solid, not remarkable for his position, which implies that whatever interior domination he develops will be more a function of placement and leverage than raw athleticism. In this regard strength gains are even more important.

How soon he’ll adapt to the pace and spacing of the NBA game remains to be seen. There are ways that professional schedules are merciless that college seasons, even long playoff runs, just can’t mimic. What is less ambiguous is that his physical journey has been exceptionally methodical for a twenty one year old. Most players at this age are still learning the art of training. Mara spent three years strengthening his physique, methodically, for a set of basketball demands he saw coming. That sort of self awareness is in its own way as astounding as anything you can measure at the combine.
