Alice Bhandhukravi Weight Loss

It was a Sunday night in April 2014. Alice Bhandhukravi’s Twitter had been hacked and a message concerning weight loss had been uploaded. Within minutes, followers were responding, some with compassion, some with the reflexive cruelty social media tends to produce. And then Alice herself answered, wresting back control of her account and putting the record right with a directness that felt almost wry given the circumstances.”.The weight loss thing definitely didn’t happen” she wrote. The cruel irony of the tweet on this day of all days. Thanks & sorry everyone! #hacked #toomanychoccies.” It was Easter Sunday. Admittedly, the irony was pretty good.

That one corrected tweet is the entire basis on which years of Alice Bhandhukravi weight loss speculation has been constructed. No known diet. No fitness program. There is no interview where she talks about a health transformation. One hacked message, disputed within hours, and still the search traffic for her name plus”.weight loss” evidently never entirely settled. It’s a weird form of digital immortality the kind where the correction is buried and the rumour still circulates.

Alice Bhandhukravi is a BBC London News presenter who has been presenting evening and late night reports since 2006, meaning Londoners have been watching her face for almost two decades. Born in Bangkok to a Thai father and a British mother, she moved to the UK as a child and studied French and Politics at the University of Bristol. After a spell as a stockbroker in the Spanish and Portuguese equity markets, she retrained as a broadcast journalist at the London College of Communication. The last detail tends to surprise people, the jump from European banking to live television is not a normal career trajectory and it shows someone comfortable making big decisions and starting over.

She is not a particularly public person by any realistic measure for someone who is on television every day. There’s no Wikipedia page about her, which is remarkable for a journalist of her years. On her Twitter she identifies herself as a”.lover of RnB”, a BBC London correspondent and a”.British Thai mélange”, while her Instagram is a modest collection of parks, cultural locations and the occasional mention to Frank Ocean. No gym selfies. No meal prep. No talk of body goals. No weight narrative to plant, even if one wanted to find one.

And yet, here we are. Some comparison sites have noticed that looking at images from when she joined the BBC in 2006 vs more current broadcasts, she seems”.somewhat larger.” That may be true. It could be that the technology of high def cameras and standard def televisions make bodies look totally different; that studio lighting has evolved; that clothes and styling are playing a role in how the camera represents a person; and that a lady simply looks different at 49 than at 30 years of age. Any of these reasons are more likely than some hidden weight transformation she’s miraculously keeping from the internet.

The Alice Bhandhukravi weight loss cycle works like a lot of algorithmically driven rumor. A hacked Tweet drives initial search interest, a few of biography websites produce articles to increase that traffic, the search engine detects the volume of searches and displays those articles to more users, more users click and then search themselves, and the cycle repeats. The core material is nearly always the same: thin sourcing, repeated wording, often contradicting claims about whether she has gained or lost weight. The confusion is not an accident, ambiguity keeps people looking.

What gets squashed in all this is the actual career. Through events that have transformed the city financial crises, political upheaval, the pandemic, the years of construction and protest and cultural flux that have defined contemporary London, Alice has been reporting and presenting for BBC London. In 2019 she sat down with artist Ian Berry at his exhibition Hotel California to talk about his use of denim as a medium, a million miles away from reading bulletin scripts. The day on which the Budget was being published and a Tube strike was happening simultaneously, she walked out among colleagues denouncing cuts to local radio. Not the attitude of someone discreetly managing a health issue. For International Women’s Day 2024, Thai PBS World named her as one of eight Thai women having an effect on the world stage. That’s a good overview of what’s been going on in her work life.

It is worth noting, and worth thinking about, that the attention to her physique is somehow tied to the fact that she has so carefully guarded her private life. When you see someone every day, year after year, you develop a peculiar familiarity with them, a sense of knowing that is not really knowledge. When the personal elements don’t show up, no husband mentioned, no parenting stories, no lifestyle information, hunger does not go away. It moves to whatever is available. The text is the only body available.

It probably doesn’t help that Alice Bhandhukravi doesn’t have the kind of public profile that would yield alternate search results. There’s no in depth magazine feature, no Desert Island Discs appearance, no podcast interview in which she reveals her daily routine or cooking preferences. The information vacuum is filled with supposition and speculation about women in the media is mostly about their physical appearance. These queries circulate whether she has gained or lost weight, whether she is well or poorly, not because anyone has evidence, but because there is space where evidence could otherwise be, and the internet abhors that type of emptiness.

The verifiable facts concerning Alice Bhandhukravi weight reduction amount to this: a hacking incident in 2014 planted a bogus claim, she disputed it the same evening, and nothing credible has come out since. She still presents BBC London News. She remains private. The rumour continues to trend on and off, thanks to content that seeks to exploit it rather than address it. For a writer who has spent two decades parsing fact from noise there is surely something enlightening about being on the receiving end of exactly this dynamic though she has, unsurprisingly, declined to comment on it.
