Ros Canter Husband Chris McAleese: The Man Who Booked the Church Before He Proposed

Ros Canter Husband

A top-tier event rider needs a specific type of partner, and Chris McAleese seems to meet the description without making a lot of effort. He is the spouse of Ros Canter, a rider from Lincolnshire who has quietly emerged as one of the most illustrious figures in British eventing in recent years. The image that appears when you read about him is almost stubbornly unremarkable: a man who reserved the church before getting married, who skipped scuba diving while his new bride returned immediately to a horse trial, and who appears in the background of badminton pictures with a mug of tea rather than a microphone.

On Saturday, July 23, 2022, Ros and Chris tied the knot in a ceremony that she recounted with the type of warmth one might anticipate from someone who has spent the majority of her adult life on horseback, in a yard, or on a podium. The information she later revealed is the kind that reveals more about a marriage than any formal declaration could. She replied, half-joking, half-resigned, “I think my husband booked the church before he asked me to marry him”, implying that he was aware that the wedding would be permanently delayed in favor of another season, another championship, or another foal if he didn’t choose a date. Even though it is tiny, it conveys a lot. Chris seems to have a deeper understanding of his wife’s life’s rhythm than most individuals could.

Following the wedding, they spent one night away. Just one. Ros then competed in the Hambro Sport Horses Burgham Horse Trials, where she rode Cooley Copresenter to win section A of a CCI3*-S. She quipped that Burgham would have to be considered the honeymoon, even if Chris wasn’t present. He had taken a scuba dive. It’s the type of information that would seem problematic in a press release. It sounds like a good arrangement in their universe. To be honest, the most practical plan two working parents could make was to wait a true family vacation with their daughter Ziggy till the end of the season.

It’s noteworthy that Ros resumed competing internationally just one month after giving birth to Ziggy Grace, who came in July 2019. Later on, the couple had a second daughter, Seneh, who was endearingly named after a home they had visited at the Black Country Museum. The name choice reveals something about the type of house they are attempting to create: it is grounded, a little out of the ordinary, and more connected to locations and memories than to style. By all accounts, Chris is the balancing force on the other side of the seesaw; he is there when his wife needs him and absent when she is doing what she does best, which is winning.

The way Chris entirely avoids the limelight that has descended upon his wife is what makes his job intriguing, at least to anybody observing from the outside. The Olympic team gold from Paris in 2024, the badminton titles from 2023 and 2025, the Burghley titles from 2024 and 2025, the world championship from 2018, and the European individual title from 2023 are all on Ros’s resume. She has raised two children while doing all of this. The math of that existence only works if someone else is doing a lot of the holding it together, and Chris and Ros’s mother, who manages the livery company at Hallington and assists on a daily basis, appear to be that someone.

Following the 2024 Burghley victory, a picture of Ros, Chris, and Ziggy appeared online. It shows them in what appears to be a peaceful time between the award ceremony and the following event. It’s difficult to ignore how awkward it appears. There’s no polished brand moment or well-planned messaging. The world’s top event rider is seated someplace with a tiny family, appearing a little worn out.

In eventing, it is simple to concentrate solely on the horses. Lordships Graffalo, or Walter, has a fan club of his own. The list of horses associated with Ros reads like a roll call of contemporary British eventing: Izilot DHI, Allstar B before him, Zenshera, Cooley Copresenter. Beneath all those victories, however, is a home that must continue to run when a parent travels to Burghley, Versailles, Pau, or LuhmΓΆlllen. In that sense, Chris is a part of a career‘s infrastructure not in a corporate sense, but in the more traditional, straightforward manner that agricultural families have long used partnerships.

How much of Chris’s professional life is part of the equestrian industry and how much is completely his own is still unknown, and it’s definitely none of our business. It’s evident that he’s happy to let his wife be the public face and that he’s set aside enough time for his own interests, such as scuba diving, family time, and a non-equestrian identity, to be true to himself. As you see this pair from a distance, you get the impression that Ros has been able to keep winning because of their equilibrium. The news focuses on the horses. Silently, the spouse continues with everything else.
