The timing of Mel Schilling’s illness is awful in a certain way. She was clearly happy when she appeared on Lorraine in January 2025 and informed the host that she was in remission. It had been a happy Christmas. The chapter on chemotherapy was closed. During those months, she used the phrase chapter a lot, as if the entire experience could be neatly bound and put away. It seemed like the story was going in a positive direction when I watched her in that interview, at ease and radiant under the studio lights. It wasn’t.

In December 2023, Schilling received a colon cancer diagnosis following what she initially believed to be stomach pains brought on by excessive travel. Her doctor attributed her doubling over on the Sydney set of Married at First Sight Australia to constipation. The kind of detail that lingers with you is that casual misread. Someone gave her laxatives while a tumor the size of a lemon was developing inside of her. By all accounts, she gained extra time by following her gut and scheduling a diagnostic back in the UK. Just before Christmas, keyhole surgery was used to remove the tumor, which she called Terry, with the kind of dark humor that most likely kept her sane.

The following day, she went for a walk. She returned to the set twenty days later. The woman’s rapid return to work following surgery reveals something about her, but it also reveals something about the speed at which reality TV is produced. MAFS doesn’t hold back. The specialists are supposed to sit behind that curving desk seeming calm, astute, and camera ready as the cameras roll and the couples quarrel. Schilling accomplished all of this while discreetly dealing with a cancer diagnosis that would have caused most individuals to completely withdraw. That’s laudable, but there’s also something a little unnerving about the way the industry continued to spin while she was trying to put herself back together.

Things appeared truly good for a few months. In January 2024, a PET scan revealed no spread. Although some of the fat cells surrounding her colon were impacted, all 38 excised lymph nodes were found to be cancerous. She began an eight cycle chemotherapy regimen that left her fingers tingling and rendered her exceedingly sensitive to cold, but did not induce hair loss.

She was always wearing gloves. In between cycles, she planned her work to take advantage of the high energy windows. Chemotherapy was finished by July 2024. She shared a picture of herself with Gareth and Maddie with the straightforward comment, Chemo done, Australia here we come. It seemed to come to a complete halt.

Then, in February 2024, she had a regular scan that was meant to confirm good news, but instead it revealed tiny nodules in her lungs. The cancer had spread to other areas. Although Schilling didn’t officially describe it that way, it’s plausible that this was the point at which the trajectory actually changed. She continued to record MAFS.

Schilling appeared on television as the calm, astute dating coach that millions of viewers trusted while undergoing sixteen more rounds of chemotherapy over the course of two years. Giving love advise to strangers while fighting for your life in private is a peculiar contradiction. The majority of her audience was unaware.

According to her own account, the possibility of a clinical study was what lifted her spirits. Her eligibility for a ground breaking program tailored to her gene type was determined by doctors, and it is scheduled to start in March 2026. Groundbreaking was a really powerful word. She talked about how her light was disappearing, how easy things were becoming impossible, and how she didn’t know how long she had left. She acknowledged her admirers. If something felt off, she advised folks to get checked out. She also declared that she would fight until the very end. It wasn’t a show. It seemed as though someone was attempting to leave something valuable for the time that was left.

The true world was bleak behind the outward bravado. After twelve seasons on the expert panel, Schilling left the Australian version of MAFS in February 2026, citing family and health concerns. He referred to her as our wee Melsie, which in some way made the loss feel more personal and genuine than any official obituary could.

There’s a propensity, when someone dies of cancer, to describe their journey as a battle and their death as a loss. Schilling definitely would have pushed back on that framing, gently but strongly, the way she pushed back on candidates who weren’t being honest with themselves. She was a psychologist by training, someone who recognized that language impacts how we experience suffering.

It was hardly a tale of defeat that she left behind. It was a woman who, at the age of 42, became a mother and a television personality. She had chemotherapy without complaining, named her tumor and made jokes about it, and used her platform to encourage people to have faith in their bodies until the very end. She was diagnosed because she ignored a GP who got it incorrect and ordered a scan anyhow. That persistence probably gave her two extra years with her daughter.

Mel Schilling’s illness advanced swiftly toward the end, faster than anyone seemed prepared for. But the way she lived through it publicly, honestly, without self pity left an impact that outlasts the diagnosis. Colon cancer screening remains inconsistent across the UK and Australia, and her experience has already moved hundreds of individuals toward meetings with their physicians. She would not have chosen this legacy. However, it’s the one that counts.
