Kirstie Allsopp Husband: Inside the 21 Year Romance That Ended in a Secret London Wedding Kirstie Allsopp Husband

Ben Andersen was able to remain virtually inconspicuous for over two decades, something that most partners of British television celebrities are unable to achieve. No joint magazine spreads, no red carpets, and no meticulously staged paparazzi photos outside a restaurant in Notting Hill. Only the rare picture of a man in a beanie staring at the camera while skiing, appearing slightly pleased to be in it at all. Then, in January 2025, he and Kirstie Allsopp secretly tied the knot at a chapel in London; the guests were unaware of the event until they had already arrived.

The extent of the lie was almost endearing. They believed they had been invited to Ben’s 64th birthday celebration. It seems that some people brought wrapping paper. Instead, they entered a wedding, where Kirstie was dressed in an Oscar de la Renta gown with gold sequins and tulle that she had allegedly purchased from the bargain rack just two weeks prior. The designer had added sleeves at the last minute. That detail has a beautifully uncomplicated quality. A lady who has spent twenty-five years on television advising others on how to spend hundreds of thousands of pounds in real estate purchased her own wedding gown at a bargain and had the sleeves sewn in just in time.

The chapel itself wasn’t picked at random. Charles Allsopp, the 6th Baron Hindlip, Kirstie’s father, passed away in June 2024, and his memorial ceremony was held there. There, her parents had tied the knot. Her grandparents had, too. The decision people make when they eventually stop acting as though the ceremony doesn’t important to them has a certain generational importance to it.

It didn’t, according to Ben himself. He had previously been married to Theresa, with whom he had two boys, Hal and Orion. He was already five months apart from Kirstie when they first met in 2004, ironically through Theresa, who had attended Bedales with Kirstie. He made it clear to Kirstie early on that he had no intention of getting married again. But he did desire kids with her. For the following twenty years, that division between marriage and family served as the foundation for their whole relationship.

For her part, Kirstie had felt like a lady with the wrong sign hanging over her head throughout her twenties. She once told the Mirror that a past lover had informed her that although she wasn’t “girlfriend material”, she would make a great wife. The comment obviously stuck with her in the same way that minor insults do. She was candid about having found possible baby donors on her own. The plan was altered when Ben entered an Orlando Fraser-hosted Tory party.

The intriguing thing is how safe she has kept him ever since. Ben is mentioned but seldom detailed in almost every interview. He is her boys’ father, her partner, and a real estate mogul. The topic is hardly seldom discussed. Living next door to the most well-known unmarried couple in Britain, Richard Curtis and Emma Freud, appears to have provided Kirstie with an ideological shield for years. She enjoyed the lack of commotion. She had no desire to get married. She often expressed how tired she was with the contemporary wedding industry’s fixation on “my big day.”

What has changed, then? Kirstie hasn’t given a complete explanation, and it’s not quite apparent. Reading her recent interviews gives me the impression that something changed once her father passed away. The family chapel’s construction is the same for weddings and memorial rituals, but the weights are different. For pragmatic, if not romantic, reasons, she could have just concluded that twenty-one years was a sufficient amount of time to take action. Even though she ultimately let her kid speak in the picture, practical doesn’t appear to be the best way to describe the two of them smiling.

Her 26-year co-host Phil Spencer was unable to attend the wedding since it was so last-minute. The couple’s desire to keep it hidden is evident from that alone. Kirstie did the most cutting-edge thing possible when a paparazzi photographer was seen loitering outside the chapel: she shared her own photos, shot by Catherine Bradley, on Instagram along with a thank-you message to the dressmakers. Her cousin Jamie Allsopp, designer India Hicks, and sisters Sofie and Natasha were among the visitors who remained silent.

Observing this from a distance makes it difficult to ignore how out of style their love story has become at a time when relationship content is the norm. There is no engagement reel. No video suggestion. No podcast for a couple. It was just a modest wedding in a chapel that had already hosted three generations of her family, a guy who declared he would never be married again, and a woman who swore she didn’t need him. They would certainly both deny it, but the whole event seems like a little act of resistance. They would claim that it was only a Tuesday with a wedding.
