Joel Osteen’s smile never completely fades. His look is constant, bright, unwavering, almost architectural, whether he’s posing next to his wife Victoria at a Nashville premiere, sitting across from Logan Paul on a podcast set, or standing behind the pulpit of a renovated basketball arena in Houston.

It’s the kind of smile that has gotten him through a hurricane scandal, twenty six books, twenty six years of preaching, and an estimated net worth of about $100 million. Depending on who you ask, that final sum is either the most costly smile in American religion or the inevitable result of heavenly favor.

This week, Osteen made headlines again after making an appearance on Logan Paul’s Impaulsive podcast, where he provided a well known defense of his financial situation. He stated that he did not own a Ferrari. No fleet of high end vehicles, no private aircraft, no boats. He drives an Audi car that is twelve years old. Since 2005, he has not received a salary from Lakewood Church.

He clarified that the funds come from media and book sales, as if that distinction somehow resolved the issue. He might think it does. Insisting you’re not that wealthy while seated in a 606,000 square foot old sports arena that cost $105 million to remodel is a unique kind of performance that calls for either a strong sense of conviction or a remarkable capacity for irony.

However, the numbers are unyielding. According to reports, Osteen’s debut book, Your Best Life Now, sold over eight million copies and spent two hundred weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. According to reports, he received an advance of more than $8.5 million for his second book, Become a Better You possibly as much as $13 million, depending on which source you believe. Since then, he has released twenty four more books, seven of which have been bestsellers.

Each speaking engagement might cost anything from $100,000 to $200,000. Approximately seven million people watch his weekly sermons on television in more than a hundred countries. According to the Houston Chronicle, the Lakewood Church itself earned $89 million in 2017, with more than 90% of that coming from contributions. $1.2 million, or roughly 1.3% of the total, was donated to charitable causes. There’s a certain weight to that statistic when you sit with it.

The house comes next. In 2010, Osteen paid $10.9 million for his main home in Houston’s River Oaks neighborhood. Six bedrooms, a guest house, a pool, several elevators, five fireplaces, and seventeen thousand square feet. It is currently valued at about $16.7 million, according to Zillow. Additionally, he retained his former residence, a modest Tanglewood property worth almost $3 million. He owns a sizable amount of real estate, which contradicts his insistence that the topic isn’t truly about money.

There are richer pastors, richer writers, and richer public speakers, which is why Joel Osteen’s net worth is such an enduring topic of interest. People continue to stumble over the disconnect between the message and the messenger. Osteen promotes the prosperity gospel, a religion that basically holds that worldly plenty is a sign of spiritual favor and that God wants His followers to be wealthy.

During their chat, Osteen reminded Paul that Abraham was among the richest men of his time. Osteen disagreed with his father’s teaching that poverty and Christianity were inextricably linked. He claimed that by adopting a different perspective, he was able to turn a sports stadium into a chapel.

Even if it causes discomfort for others, there is a certain honesty in it. Osteen doesn’t use ambiguous terminology, in contrast to certain leaders in the prosperity gospel movement. He expresses his belief that prosperity and faith are compatible, if not linked, in a straightforward manner. Critics have been questioning whether such ideology can withstand investigation, whether it is scriptural or not, for decades.

Something that had been simmering for years came to a head during the Hurricane Harvey incident in 2017, when Lakewood first seemed hesitant to open its enormous doors to flood victims. In the end, the church served as a shelter and helped with reconstruction, but the reluctance remained ingrained in the public consciousness, much like the cash envelopes a plumber discovered behind a wall in 2021.

Kanye West, whose Sunday Service gospel event Lakewood hosted in 2019, was also mentioned in Osteen’s podcast appearance. Osteen’s account of a kind, genuine Ye who visited his house for supper is not entirely consistent with the person who has since descended into public antisemitic outbursts and been denied entry into the United Kingdom.

Osteen stated that he frequently prays for Ye, subtly admitting that the rapper has strayed a little off course. That little off target statement may be the most Osteen thing ever said it’s kind, subtle, and just ambiguous enough to avoid making anyone uncomfortable.

After 26 years at Lakewood, Osteen continues to elicit passionate reactions in nearly every direction. His followers perceive a man who has made faith simple and hopeful for millions of people.

His detractors describe him as a multimillionaire who preaches prosperity from a renovated arena while his church only gives a small portion of its profits to those in need. As usual, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle, but to find it, you have to look past that smile, which is still incredibly hard to interpret after all this time.
