The rumors about Dagen McDowell’s health have taken on the characteristics of a certain type of online rumor that never goes away the kind that becomes quieter but never truly goes away. She still appears on Outnumbered and The Five swaps jabs with Sean Duffy on The Bottom Line, and goes onto the Fox Business set most weeknights with that dry Virginia drawl that hasn’t softened in twenty years on television. Nevertheless, when you search for her name, “illness” appears first in the autocomplete. The way the internet makes these decisions is peculiar.

As far as anybody outside of her close social circle can tell, the narrative begins in early 2020. Around the same time that her then husband Jon McConnochie filed for divorce, McDowell left her position as presenter of Mornings with Maria*. Her absence was lengthy enough and inexplicable enough to encourage the type of armchair diagnosis that the internet likes. A few viewers mentioned breast cancer in whispers. Others noted how much thinner she was. The fact that neither Fox nor McDowell ever addressed any of it is, in a sense, a response.

It’s important to pause here because there is sometimes a huge discrepancy between what the public believes about a public person and what is truly known about them. McDowell has never acknowledged having a major ailment. She has never revealed a diagnosis on social media. Her weight reduction and her time away from the television seem to be the main sources of the medical claims that are circulating on health and celebrity websites. Some of these claims are extremely precise, while others are general enough to apply to anybody. Reading them gives the impression that some authors are only speculating in paragraphs.

We do know that her mother, Joyce Holt McDowell, passed away from metastatic lung cancer that spread to her pelvis and spine because she decided to tell us. Before discussing that battle, McDowell kept it a secret for years. On World Cancer Day in 2022, she eventually made a public statement, but even then, she did it in a manner that is becoming uncommon on cable news briefly, almost casually, and with the same reserve that she uses when discussing most personal matters. In 2017, Gerri Willis, her co host, talked candidly about her own breast cancer. McDowell congratulated Willis on live, describing this type of candor as an odd but genuine kind of community.

The simple tale of a sick anchor concealing something is complicated by that moment, which makes it worth remembering. McDowell has demonstrated that she will talk about sickness at her own pace and when it is important to her. We can certainly learn more from the fact that she hasn’t discussed her personal health since then than from the rumors.

Her weight reduction has been progressive rather than abrupt, according to numerous people who keep a close eye on her. On set, she glides with ease. She speaks in a calm tone. Of course, none of this shuts anything out, and it would be stupid to act otherwise, but it does imply that any changes she’s gone through could have more to do with lifestyle than a crisis.

I keep returning to this cultural detail. Women are often forced into a specific silhouette by television, particularly cable news, and viewers pick up on every deviation. Over the years, Maria Bartiromo, Harris Faulkner, and Dana Perino have all endured waves of rumors regarding their age, weight, plastic surgery, and disease.

It seldom ever represents anything that can be independently verified, and it’s practically a rite of passage. Before media discovered her, McDowell once made a joke about working as a beer salesgirl at a Virginia golf club. She has always appeared a bit bemused by the whole act of being a TV personality. The rumors may persist because of their unyielding veracity. She doesn’t act vulnerable in front of an audience.

Her career hasn’t slowed down at this time. The Bottom Line, which she and Sean Duffy debuted in January 2023, has been a staple of the Fox Business schedule with a subtle constancy that keeps people employed but doesn’t garner much attention. She continues to battle with The Five co hosts. On film, she still appears to be someone who reads more than she sleeps. The internet doesn’t really have the authority to determine whether something private is going on behind that, as it always is for everyone.

It’s difficult to ignore how much of this narrative is really about what is concealed. McDowell’s public persona has been shaped by her views on markets, policy, and Federal Reserve actions, with virtually little self reflection. That decision is a silent declaration in a media world that encourages confession. If she has a sickness, it is still hers.
