Mick Hucknall Net Worth How a Manchester Kid With No Mum Built a $60 Million Fortune

Mick Hucknall has a subtle quality that makes him exceptional. The entirety of his life has been shaped around his voice, not just the warm, yearning instrument that once dominated radio waves throughout Europe and North America. Mick Hucknall’s estimated net worth of $60 million is the result of decades of strategic decision making, inventive obstinacy, and a reluctance to be one thing. Yes, singer. In addition, a winemaker, real estate developer, estate owner, and political analyst. If this portfolio belonged to anybody else, it would seem unlikely.

His father, Reginald, was a barber, and he was born in June 1960 at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Manchester. Mick’s mother departed when he was three years old. Really, just disappeared. One of his most cherished songs was shaped by that bereavement, which was silent but profound. Holding Back the Years was more than a popular song. He acknowledged that it was a very personal piece written from a position of genuine emotional weight. When it came on the radio, people felt it so deeply for a reason. That type of reality is found in some songs.

Growing up in Denton, Hucknall attended the all boys Audenshaw School before going on to Tameside College and finally the School of Art at Manchester Polytechnic. He resided in the infamous Manchester area known as the Hulme Crescents for a while, where crime was so prevalent that he allegedly kept an axe by his bed at night. The distance between that world and the Sicilian vineyard he would eventually acquire is difficult to ignore.

In terms of music, 1976 was a turning point. He was present when the Sex Pistols played in Manchester’s Lesser Free Trade Hall, an event that has since become almost legendary in British music history. A click was made. He was performing with a punk group called the Frantic Elevators by the late 1970s, producing four singles that were largely forgotten. However, it wasn’t a waste of time. He was developing a performing instinct and studying the fundamentals of music.

In 1985, Simply Red was formed, and it was somewhat casually named after Hucknall’s distinctive red hair. Money’s Too Tight (To Mention),” the initial song, signaled a true shift in British music. The band had built a fan base by the time Holding Back the Years became a transatlantic smash. Then, in 1989, If You Don’t Know Me by Now became the number one song in the US.

Then followed Stars in 1991, which spent weeks at the top of the UK charts and went on to become one of the best selling albums in history. Over the course of their career, Simply Red won two Brit Awards for Best British Group and sold over 50 million records across ten studio releases. These figures are substantial.

Perhaps just as much of Hucknall’s fortune came from his sound financial management as from his skill. He didn’t just gather royalties and move on throughout the Simply Red years. He made a wager. Together with bandmate Chris De Margary, he co owns the Glenmore Estate in County Donegal, Ireland, a plot of land where they run a fishing and hunting tourist company. Hucknall is well known for being an avid fisherman, and it seems natural that a guy who spent decades in the public eye would prefer to spend his private time knee deep in a river in the peaceful Irish countryside.

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the narrative is the Sicilian chapter. He purchased an 18th century old mill next to Mount Etna’s natural park around the year 2000. He arrived as a visitor, fell in love, and made the decision to stay.

On the property, he constructed a winery that he called Il Cantante, which means The Singer.” Using local grape varietals, the label creates three wines from three vineyards: a white and two reds. Around 2014, he put the home up for sale, asking €650,000. It’s still unclear if that was a profit, a change of course, or just the end of one chapter.

Hucknall is a co owner of Ask Property Development, a UK based business that specializes in erecting public buildings and city squares. It’s a far way from the music business, and it implies someone who considers stability and legacy in a manner that many musicians just don’t.

The financial scenario was further complicated by his solo career. The 2008 song Tribute to Bobby,” which honored blues musician Bobby Bland, peaked at number eighteen in the United Kingdom. 2012 saw American Soul rise to number six and get a Gold certification. These weren’t huge commercial successes, but they showed that Hucknall had a steady following as a stand alone artist outside from the Simply Red brand.

As all of this has developed over time, it seems that Hucknall recognized early on that although brilliance opens doors, longevity necessitates organization. In 2010, he wed Gabriella Wesberry in Scotland’s Forter Castle. The pair had a daughter named Romy. He splits his time between the UK, Sicily, and Ireland, leading a purposefully modest life that stands in stark contrast to the image of a pop celebrity. Simply Red’s 2015 reunion, subsequent tour, and 2019 release of Blue Eyed Soul demonstrate the continued popularity of their work.

Mick Hucknall’s $60 million net worth at age 65 seems less surprising than the obvious outcome of a life with a unique purpose. He had a bed in a poor estate with an axe next to it, a mother who had abandoned him, and a father who chopped hair. From there, he created something truly remarkable, note by note and investment by investment.
