When Paolo Banchero walks onto an NBA court it almost seems dramatic. His height subtly declares itself even before the ball is tipped and the first possession finds rhythm. He doesn’t just fit in with the current NBA scene; at six feet ten inches he slightly warps it.

In basketball height is frequently viewed as a checkbox in scouting reports and a straightforward statistic. However observing Banchero’s movements such as his ability to slip past opponents lower his shoulder in the post or take a stride back for a jumper suggests a more subtle aspect. He has an almost active size.

Strategic like a tool he doesn’t merely own but continuously modifies. It’s important to keep in mind that Banchero wasn’t a mystery when he first joined the NBA. His only season at Duke University had suggested what his physical attributes would reveal.

With an average of more than 17 points and over eight rebounds he played with the poise of someone who knew that height wasn’t enough. His game had a cadence and a level of patience that suggested he wasn’t in a rush to prove anything.

His stated height of 6’10 seems to just provide a portion of the story though. Players like Banchero frequently appear larger in person not just in terms of size but also in presence. Once he takes a position his 250 pound size adds substance to that height making him challenging to move.

It’s the kind of physicality that doesn’t necessarily manifest in box scores but is evident when defenders begin pushing and leaning without making any progress. Like most players of his build he has been the subject of constant comparisons.

Because of their similar scoring instincts and physical characteristics names like Julius Randle and Carmelo Anthony come up frequently. It’s not totally evident from watching Banchero that those analogies accurately describe him. He glides at a slightly different tempo and handles the ball a little more fluidly than anticipated.

This is where his height gets more intriguing not as a fixed quantity but as a component in a larger formula. Because of his ability to see over opponents at 6’10 he can pass out of double teams really easily. In college he averaged more than three assists per game which raises concerns about how his role would change given his size. Could he start acting more like a playwright? It’s feasible but players are often reshaped by the NBA in unexpected ways.

There is a specific point in the warmups when Banchero begins shooting from the outside of the arena. The ball arcs in a manner that feels trained rather than forced and exits his hands neatly almost casually. These days it’s expected to be both tall and skilled. A 6’10 player can no longer live only close to the rim.

People frequently characterize his wingspan roughly 7’1 as decent not elite. It’s a strange criticism given his current level of effectiveness. It might be a reflection of the NBA’s evolving standards where even small departures from ideal specifications draw criticism. It’s still unclear if it really matters. Just as shorter wingspans don’t always restrict attacking innovation players with longer arms don’t always improve as defenders.

Additionally there is the ongoing matter of defense which seems to follow him like any statistic. His lack of excellent lateral agility raises questions about how to defend faster guys. There are hesitant times when you watch him defend brief periods when he appears to be thinking rather than responding. It’s a work in progress rather than an error.

His desire to participate physically is what makes him stand out. He finishes at the rim and frequently absorbs hits since he doesn’t back down from contact. In the NBA today where adaptability frequently dictates longevity that mix of height strength and balance feels especially pertinent.

The way the league has evolved to make room for guys like him is difficult to ignore. Ten years ago a 6’10 forward might only be allowed to play certain roles. The expectations are now more expansive defensively switch handle the ball and shoot from a distance. Banchero appears to be suited for that style of basketball even though he’s still learning how far he can push those limits.

There’s a subtle sense of expectation as his early professional seasons develop. Something more measured not precisely hype. His statistics which are now rising above 22 points each game indicate to a player who is establishing his feet rather than hitting his ceiling. There are evenings when it appears as though he has already come setting the tempo and determining the games.

Perhaps the least intriguing aspect of Paolo Banchero is his height. Even so the discussion frequently starts there. Maybe because it’s the most obvious aspect of who he is and the most understandable element.
It is evident from attentively observing him that 6’10 is only an outline. The talent the ability to make decisions and the developing confidence that fill it are still developing. Furthermore it’s likely that the most crucial measurements are still unrecorded.
