There is a specific type of cruelty that poses as curiosity. It sounds like the inquiry What happened to Lena Dunham? that was posted beneath a recent TikTok of the director and writer promoting Too Much a new Netflix series. The ambiguity of the words makes them seem benign. However the meaning is clear to anybody who read the comment area. Her body is meant. Lena Dunham gained weight as a result. It implies that even after over ten years in the public eye the discussion still ends up in the same tiresome spot.

When Girls debuted on HBO in 2012 Dunham was twenty four years old. She had directed episodes written it produced it and appeared in it. The program which revolved around four young women in Brooklyn who were stumbling through their twenties was snappy awkward and occasionally quite brilliant. It was a dirtier grittier version of Sex and the City. The show’s politics depiction of privilege and unapologetic sex scenes were all hotly contested by critics.

However none of that was the topic of the loudest and most persistent discourse. Dunham’s physique was the subject. Whether or not she was too overweight to pass for a dating person. If she was naked was it voluntary? whether her body type was appropriate for television. The internet saw her physical appearance as a competitive sport and she was in her mid twenties operating one of the most talked about shows on television.

The inspection was particularly strange because Dunham appeared to be ordinary in the purest sense of the word rather than disdainful. She had a typical woman’s appearance. Not like a Hadid sister not like a Marvel star who underwent personal training and calorie restriction for six months. She had the appearance of someone you could see in queue at a coffee shop or on the Tube. And it was the issue in some way.

It turns out that boundary pushing narrative is acceptable in Hollywood. It just cannot handle being delivered by a typical body. In a recent interview Dunham stated unequivocally that she expected people to respond to the nudity or the type of sex the show portrayed but she thought it was crazy that her body shape would become such a fixation. She might have miscalculated the specific poison meant for women who don’t offer an apology for occupying space.

Dunham was dealing with a much more severe issue than comment sections behind the public commotion. Endometriosis a disease that affects millions of women and causes chronic often crippling discomfort was her diagnosis. She had eight surgeries over the years in an attempt to treat it but none of them were successful. She took the tough choice to have a hysterectomy in 2018 which entails the complete removal of the uterus.

According to research women who have hysterectomies are more likely to gain weight in the year that follows the procedure. She ended her long term relationship with Jack Anton off about the same time. She eventually acknowledged that part of her sudden weight loss was caused by depression. It has nothing to do with a workout regimen or lifestyle decision. It was the tangled bodily remnants of medical trauma disease and grief.

The addiction was another issue. Dunham has openly discussed her reliance on prescription benzodiazepines which she took for years in addition to her OCD treatment. Eventually she checked herself into rehab became sober in 2018 and saw her body transform once more as the drugs left her system. She became heavier.

She was more at ease. For the first time in years she felt hungry. She uploaded side by side pictures of herself at 138 and 162 pounds in an open Instagram post noting that the slimmer version was someone who was living off of a purse full of prescription drugs excessive caffeine and tiny amounts of sugar. She described the heavier form as joyful joyful and liberating. The subtle rebellion in that framing the rejection to let the lesser number to stand in for the greater self is difficult to ignore.

After relocating to London Dunham wed musician Luis Felber in 2021. When she shared wedding pictures online body shaming comments flooded the comment area. She spoke to them with a tone that was almost exhausting emphasizing that good habits not only bad ones can lead to weight increase. People were comparing her to pictures that were shot while she was actively addicted and untreated. For four years she had been sober.

Ehlers Danlos syndrome a genetic disorder affecting collagen that can impair all organ systems was the diagnosis made for her. She had survived COVID 19 fibromyalgia and a complex connective tissue disease. Strangers on the internet felt entitled to comment even though her body had endured more than most people’s. The irony speaks for itself.

Now that Too Much has debuted on Netflix Dunham is back in the spotlight. One significant aspect of her approach to this project though is that she decided not to star in it. Instead she cast Megan Stalter as the main character. She’s been open about why in interviews. She refused to allow her body to be dissected once more. No not at this point in her life. Not after all of this.

She has stated that it was a difficult decision and even printed phrases convey the weight of her choice. She is very protective of Stalter and the rest of her cast threatening to fight anyone who tries to harm them. A creator who creates a show based in part on her own life and then leaves the frame because the world made it too painful to stand in it is both admirable and a touch heartbreaking.

This is all made worse by the larger cultural environment. The body positivity movement was really taking off at the time Girls was airing. Ashley Graham appeared in magazine ads. In sold out arenas Lizzo sang songs about self love. There was a brief impression that perhaps the culture was changing. Ozempic then showed up. Hollywood practically vanished suddenly. Low rise jeans have returned. Lizzo began her own weight loss effort in response to criticism.

Dunham herself referred to this as a Ozempic out moment and candidly questioned the continued existence of the body positivity movement. That’s a valid question. Observing how her own return to public life has been received it appears that the answer is not really. When a lady approaches the red carpet and someone remarks on her size right away it doesn’t really matter.

It’s not really a weight story concerning Lena Dunham’s weight gain. It’s a narrative of mental health chronic disease recovery after surgery sobriety and the gradual flawed process of creating a life that puts wellness before appearance. She began keeping a food journal after overcoming a ten year battle with bulimia not out of conceit but as a means of introspection.

She’s a yogi. She carries dogs. She resides in London with her spouse writes novels and directs movies. She has stated repeatedly that she has come to terms with the fact that her body is a dynamic organism rather than a static one. For someone who has been publicly weighed and measured since her twenties it’s a wonderfully grounded statement. It’s another matter completely whether someone is truly paying attention.
